What is Aarewah?
अरे वा वा वा वा वा !!! ही आरोळी सगळे सी ऒ ई पी चे लोक एकमुखाने द्य़ायचो
Aarewah is Marathi slang for "Too Good".
It’s an expression which was used by students at then Govt College Of Engineering Pune Students for expressing their happiness as a community.
May it be Mangala (Cinema Hall near COEP), Gathering, Insynch (Fergusson Annual Social Event), Firodiya, Purshottam, Cricket matches or anything else couple of COEPians will start shouting Aare wah wah wah wah wah and everyone else would join. It was/is hallmark of COEPians in Pune.
There are still arguments about how many Wah's are there in this slogan. I firmly believe there are five but Girish Kurkure will have a final say on this. He was best slogan leader for all time in COEP.
I recall during our college time we would ask him to start the slogan just for the heck of it.
The sole reason this slogan is used to build COEP community is that there never was any divide which we stopped us from joining this saying slogan.
Those from COEP will know we have quite a few divides amongst ourselves. like any other college. City/Hostel, Studious/Taporis, Actives/Passives, Nashik/Dhule/Pune/Mumbai/Karad .... and many more. Usually it would be very hard to get everyone on board on any issue but once we started rhyming Aare wah wah wah wah wah everyone would join.
Mission of aarewah is to reignite and re-live the spirit and hence the name.
Who started this slogan?
We don't know. As the legend goes it’s always been there. It will be activated in some batches and then it will go in hibernation for few batches.
Between periods of 1989 to 1996 this slogan saw best of its days.
Efforts are underway to patent this slogan.
Who started this website?
Kurkure, the slogan leader of our time was also running a yahoo group called aarewah which had all his batch mates and friends. They used to share lot of info through this group. Lot of ideas was being floated. Then Girish pulled Ajit and Shilawat into this group. These two gentlemen then got Hemant, Raju Bhadke, Manoj Nawandar, Kamal Kumar, Vijay Patange and few more this group.
The website came into existence after few at aarewah yahoo group thought they can contribute to COEP community (students and alumni) by giving them a platform to communicate. Ajit took initiative and build the first website. Most of the idea work was done by Ajit, Sandeep, Girish and Hemant in initial days. Other significant contributors were Sonali and Nitin Lad.
Initial days max hits on this website were on posts done by Nitin Lad on Puneri Patya.
What does Aaarewah want to achieve?
Actually, nothing big.
